Oddly this series does not seem to keep to the traditional series numbering, where the first two numbers relate to the year of first publication (approximately). Only 13 of the 36 titles are actually original in the sense that the rest of them appeared in a mostly unchanged form as other books in other series. A plethora of different authors and illustrators are used but because of the universal adoption of the image in a circular window on the front cover and the reasonably comprehensive use of a striking yellow background the books are all easily identifiable.

One thing to be careful of with this series is that the copyright dates found in the books often relate to the original titles when published in earlier series. For this reason it can be extremely difficult to establish when titles actually appeared. It appears that the series began 1976 - 1977, since 633 series was still live in 1976 and the first new title for series 634 has a copyright of 1977. Dating the withdrawl of the series is also very hard but titles moved from this series to another in around 1987 which may give some indications.
