Flight 1 - Austrailia

Like all this series it was written by David Scott Daniell with illustrations from Jack Matthew. First published in 1958, by Wills & Hepworth, this title tells of the journey of John & Allison to the other side of the world.

With the help of a very useful map, inside the front and rear of the book we can follow the children's journey both to and from Australia. In an age where air travel was still very young this must have been an adventure well beyond the means of most children. Obviously aimed at older readers the font used is much smaller than usual and allows a lot of text to be included on the page - more text = more information. As with all these titles the stereotypical view of an Englishman abroad lies on just below the surface.

First issued in 1958, the earliest editions came with a dust jacket over a buff cover. The very earliest would have also had the old style ladybird "open-winged" logo. First editions are assumed to be those that are the only title in the series listed on the rear flap of the dust jacket.
