What to look for in Winter If any books epitomise Ladybird then surely this, and the other three titles, should be amongst them. In a departure from the previous format E.L.Grant Watson teamed up with C.F.Tunnicliffe to produce a completely new style and direction. Using a much smaller text font allowed a lot more information to be included on the page. This, together with an obviously older target redership, gives us a flowing view of right through winter. Coupled with the wonderfully evocative illustrations, this book succeeds in giving a real insight into life in the countryside during these hard months. First editions are very easy to identify: on page 16 there was a printing error stating that the fruit of the yew tree were not poisonous. Obviously this was not particularly good for a children's book and errata slips were enclosed. Other early copies came with dust jackets and early style logo. Whilst this title is very collectable, due to its obvious popularity, and being aimed at an older reader, they tend to be fairly easy to come by (at least as easy as they get). |
