  Introduction

Possibly one of the finest Ladybird series. The first diversion into strict non-fiction may lack a little in consistancy, with so many different writers and illustrators, but more than makes up for it with its stamp on ladybird books history. Originally based around the three bird observation books it soon diverged to cover many different popular natural science areas. It also marked a move by Wills & Hepworth to target a slightly older age group, not only is this shown by the recommended reading ages in the catalogues but the early books also used the title "A Ladybird Senior".

All the books up to (and including) "Seashore.." would have come with dustjackets with the others following in the standard matt editions. The original three bird books were withdrawn somewhere between 1965-1970, probably replaced with the updated bird books that came out in 1967 & 1968. The series was dramatically revised and cut back to a core of 8 books, around the end of the 1970's before being finally withdrawn at some unknown date shortly after.
