The first book in the series. Story by Noel Barr and illustrations by P.B.Hickling.

Tells the story of a small harvest mouse who wanders out of his field one day while his parents are sleeping. He comes across Susan and Mary having a picnic. While the girls are distracted he sneaks over to eat some of their sandwiches. Then he climbs into the satchel and ends up going to sleep in Susan's scarf. He doesn't wake up until Susan's mother finds him when she unpacks. Although Susan would love to keep him she realises that he belongs back in the country with his parents and the next day takes him back to the field to let him go.

This book, as with all the series, first appeared with a DJ over a pasted on picture taken from the book complete with an intricate pencil drawing on the endpapers. This changed with the progression to buff boards with either brown or blue ladybird logo endpapers. There was also a subtle change in shade of the DJ colour from purple to a more red.
