Written by Derek McCulloch (Uncle Mac) and illustrations by Sep. E.Scott this book became the first in the series.

The book itself goes through a selection of common animals/birds with a one page desciption and matching illustration on the opposite page. The images are quite stylised but seem to hold a very dreamy, nostalgic quality.

The early copies would have had a dust jacket over a picture board. Later the dust jacket would have covered the standard buff book, although the copy I have (1955, 16th) has a green line drawing on grey boards under the jacket.
