Rhymes The first book in the series by Auntie Muriel (Muriel Levy) with illustrations by Robert Knight. Some of the illustrations are quite different from other books in that they extend the colour illustration as a pencil sketch on to the text page. The rhymes included (27th edition, 1960) are"Little Bo-Peep", "Ding, Dong, Bell", Little Miss Muffett", "The Queen of Hearts", "Old King Cole", "Little Boy Blue", "Humpty Dumpty", "I had a Little Pony", "Jack and Jill", "Little Jack Horner", "Old Mother Hubbard and her Dog". The 24th edition, 1956 has an extra rhyme "Where Are You Going To My Pretty Maid" after "Ding, Dong, Bell" and a title page for the "Old Mother Hubbard" epic. It really is very interesting to see how much the rhymes have changed compared with the present day. The "Jack and Jill" have very different verses from those heard today and the "Old Mother Hubbard" is quite an epic spanning 14 verses. |
