| Overview
The history of Wills & Hepworth Ltd stems right back to 1867. Then Harry Wills started a bookshop which soon became a small scale printing and publishing business, primarily producing a trade journal - 'Wills Almanac'. Before long William Hepworth joined as a partner in 1904 and the firm of Wills & Hepworth was born. As 'jobbing' printers they produced many diverse titles and products in the early years. As well as the trade journals I have also seen an early version of the game 'Campaign', later to be bought by Waddington, which was printed by Wills & Hepworth. Also at this point they started printing a range of early books, called the 'ladybird series' especially for children. These books are very rare and particularly hard to get hold of. The advent of World War II, together with progresses in printing technologies, seemed to be the catalyst to take this production to a new level. |
